In present days India's first post office go ruining over at Khejuri under Purba Medinipur District, West Bengal. During the Portuguese period, the Khejuri had gained a reputation as a port. The port became a meeting place for European businessmen and Dutch, Portuguese and other foreign nationals. In 1756, India was connected to other parts of Europe via Khujeri port.

India's postal system began when the port prospered. The country's first post office, built in Khejuri in 1800, was named Kedgiri.
Two years ago, a survey was conducted on various stops scattered in Khejuri in East Midnapore district. The state heritage commission has listed this ancient post office and efforts are being made to ensure that there is no further damage to this heritage site.
The first post office was three stories. This post office was connected to the telegraph line built in 1851, 1852. Cargo was unloaded from large ships at The Port of Khejuri. Accordingly, the post office was formed. From Here, the ships coming by ship used to go to different parts of India. The first telegraph system in the country started from this post office. The telegraph system was 82 miles from Khejuri to Kolkata, Diamond Harbour, Bishnupur, Mayapur and Kumarhati.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy spent the night in this place while going abroad. During those time he sent two letters.

ভারতের প্রথম ডাকঘর :
পর্তুগীজ আমলে খেজুরি বন্দর হিসেবে সুখ্যাতি অর্জন করেছিল। ইউরোপীয় ব্যাবসায়ী সহ অলন্দাজ, পর্তুগীজ ও বিভিন্ন বিদেশি নাগরিক দের মিলনস্থল হয়ে উঠেছিল এই খেজুরি বন্দর। ব্রিটিশ দের হাত ধরে ১৭৫৬ সালে খেজুরি বন্দর ইউরোপ এর অন্যান্য অংশের সঙ্গে ভারতের যোগাযোগ স্থাপন হয়।
বন্দর টি সমৃদ্ধ হয়ে উঠলে ভারতের ডাক ব্যাবস্থার সূচনা হয়। ১৮০০ সালে খেজুরিতে তৈরি হওয়া দেশের প্রথম ডাকঘর টির নাম রাখা হয়েছিল কেডগিরি।
দু বছর আগে পূর্ব মেদিনীপুর জেলার খেজুরিতে ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে থাকা বিভিন্ন স্টপতির উপর সমীক্ষা করা হয়। রাজ্য হেরিটেজ কমিশন এই প্রাচীন ডাকঘরটির তালিকাভুক্ত করে ও এই হেরিটেজ স্থানের আর যাতে কোনো ক্ষতি না হয় তার ব্যবস্থা করার চেষ্টা করা হচ্ছে।
প্রথম এই ডাকঘর টি তিনতলা ছিল। ১৮৫১, ১৮৫২ সালে তৈরি হওয়া টেলিগ্রাফ লাইন এর সাথে এই ডাকঘর টি যুক্ত ছিল। খেজুরি বন্দরে বড় বড় জাহাজ থেকে মালপত্র নামানো হতো। সেই সূত্রে গড়ে ওঠে ডাকঘর। ইউরোপ থেকে জাহাজে করে আসা ছিটিপত্র এখান থেকে ভারতের বিভিন্ন অংশে যাওয়া আসা করতো। দেশে প্রথমে টেলিগ্রাফ ব্যবস্থা এই ডাকঘর থেকে শুরু হয়। টেলিগ্রাফ ব্যবস্থা খেজুরি থেকে কলকাতা, ডায়মন্ড হারবার, বিষ্ণুপুর, মায়াপুর ও কুমারহাটি পর্যন্ত ৮২ মাইল তার ব্যাপ্তি ছিল।
রাজা রাম মোহন রায় বিদেশে যাওয়ার সময় এই খেজুরি তে রাত্রি যাপন করেন। তিনি দুটি চিঠি পাঠিয়েছিলেন।
