Goddess Jagaddhatri Puja is venerated in West Bengal area. Goddess Jagaddhatri or Jagadhatri or Jagat Dhatri is a part of Goddess Durga. The word Jagaddhatri implies mother of this world or conveyor of the world.

History of Jagaddhatri Puja :

As per ancient history Jagaddhatri Puja started in Chandannagar, West Bengal by Indranarayan Chowdhury. It was introduced in Krishnagar, West Bengal in the year 1762. But the beginning of this puja in Chandannagar probably dates back earlier than 1750. Krishnachandra Ray, the King of Krishnanagar of Nadia district, had introduced the public worship of goddess Jagaddhatri, as per legend. The festival was later initiated by Sarada Devi, Sri Ramakrishna’s wife.

Jagaddhatri figures in the semi-historical fictional work by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya’s “Anandamath” , from which the book as well as the Indian national song “Vande Mataram” is taken.  



Chasapara Barowari puja “BURIMA” Krishnagar

The Jagaddhatri Puja at Chasapara Barowari has begun in 1772 followed by its presentation at Rajbari of Krishnagar. The Goddess of Chasapara Barowari being the most seasoned one, is prevalently known as "BURIMA". Throughout the long term, the ubiquity of Burima has expanded by jumps and bounds. Oldest Jagadhatri puja in Chandannagar :

Indranarayana Chowdhury was the dewan of the French government at Chandannagar. The worship of Jagadhatri puja fascinated him in the palace of Raja Krishnachandra Roy. After seeing this puja, he started the first Jagadhatri Puja at Laxmiganj Chaul Patty in Chandranagar.
